The ONE Self Care Practice You NEED to start doing TODAY
Not to brag buuut within the past year, I have become the self care queen! No lie. I went from stress and overwhelmed with to-do's to zen queen teaching people about self care. A huge part of my transformation has been because of this one self care practice.
I can bet you something special that my Social media friends already know what this tip is because I do it so much and I am obnoxious about sharing it on social media. Without further ado, let me introduce you to my favorite self care routine - NOURISH Wednesdays.
At the beginning of the year I decided to try something new. I would set aside one day a week to experiment on different things that nourished me. Quite frankly, at the beginning of the year I knew that I wanted to focus a huge part of my growth process this year on nourishment but I was not sure of what that even looked like. I knew about some possible things that I thought would nourish me - like the classic healthy food, and massages but I wanted to find out more about nourishing myself and it has been quite the experiment!
I decided out of nowhere that my workaholic productivity junkie self would start taking Wednesdays off work to nourish myself. Well, that did not go well with ANYONE. I have some pretty supportive and amazing people in my life but EVERYONE (parents, bosses, friends) was worried that I suddenly wanted to take a perfectly capable and good working day out of commission.
I'm just going to be really honest with you and let you in on a little secret about me - one of my biggest and deepest fears revolves arounds being considered lazy (thank you childhood trauma) and all of that fear was triggered in full force when I was met with resistance by my people. BUT I buckled down, showed work that I was actually the least productive on Wednesdays and that my work product would not be affected if I was refreshed every other day of the week, told my parents to trust me, and told my friends to consider it a social experiment. The first Wednesday I actually decided to go for it was pretty weird. I was so bored and kept refreshing my email. Wishing that someone would try to contact me so I would have an excuse to get to work. It was hard!
Self care is freaking hard, just FYI.
SLOWLY, week after week I kept showing up on Wednesdays telling my body and soul and spirit to trust that I would show up to figure out how to nourish them. In practical ways that meant cooking up a deliciously healthy brunch (to nourish my body), spending an extended amount of time praying and reading my Bible (to nourish my Spirit), and reading a book (to nourish my soul). That was it for the first month. As I kept showing up, a strange thing happened. It was as though my body, mind, soul, Spirit began to give me ideas about what they needed. I would wake up on Wednesdays and just knew exactly what they needed that week. It became easier to say 'no' to demands and to really take up that space for me, and it has changed my life! So much goodness has come out of Wednesdays and I am genuinely more productive on other work days.
My Wednesdays have evolved over the past 9 months but after doing this for about 36 times I have learnt a few hundred ways to nurture and nourish myself. The one rule of nourish days is that there is no rule. The feeling I look to invoke is a sense of being unhurried and going with the flow.
I have found a rhythm that works beautifully for me which includes care, community, and catch up without feeling too structured.
I would totally encourage you to try this practice. It doesn't have to start out as a whole day - just take a few hours where you are completely devoted to nourishing your whole being. It will change your life - I can guarantee that!
